WalkTale Privacy Policy
Effective: October 14, 2026 (added: widget, “My photo” card, GDPR section)
WalkTale (the “App”) turns the distance you already walked into playful comparisons, cards and short videos. This policy explains what the App handles and how.
1. No account, no server
There is no sign-up or login, and we do not collect your name, contact details or email. We do not run a server and cannot see your records.
2. Apple Health (HealthKit)
- Only if you allow it, the App reads step count and walking + running distance, read only. It never writes to Health.
- Health data is processed and stored only on your device. It is never sent to us or third parties and never used for advertising, analytics or tracking.
- You can turn access off anytime in Settings > Health > Data Access & Devices > WalkTale.
3. Motion & Fitness
If Health has no data and you choose it, the App reads the steps and distance your iPhone counts. This stays on the device.
4. Location
Location is used only while you record a walk you started, to measure distance and draw the route. Background location keeps that walk recording when the screen locks; iOS shows the location indicator, and updates stop when you end the walk. Routes stay on your device. The App never asks for Always access.
Location is processed only on your device to measure walks. We do not collect, store, use or share your personal location information.
5. Data stored on your device
- Daily steps and distance (from Health, Motion, or typed in)
- Recorded walks: time, distance, route
- Body weight you enter (only to estimate calories for food comparisons)
- Cards and videos you made (Keepsakes), settings
Delete it anytime with My > Delete all records, or by deleting the App.
6. Photos
The App uses add-only Photos access to save cards and videos. It cannot read your photo library. For the “My photo” card you pick a single photo with the system photo picker; only that photo is used, on your iPhone, and it is never uploaded.
7. Advertising
The App shows Google AdMob ads (a banner in Records and optional rewarded ads you choose to watch). To serve ads, Google may process device information, approximate location (from IP) and ad interactions.
- The App does not request the advertising identifier (IDFA) and does not track you.
- Health data, walk routes and weight are never used for or shared with advertising.
- Where required by law, Google’s consent form (UMP) is shown; change it in My > Ad privacy choices.
See Google advertising and the Google Privacy Policy.
7a. Usage statistics and crash reports
To improve the App we use Google Firebase Analytics and Crashlytics. Feature usage counts (app opens, screens viewed, cards made or shared) and crash information (device model, iOS version, app version) are sent to Google.
- Steps, distances, health data, walk routes and weight are never sent.
- No advertising identifier (IDFA) is collected, and nothing is used for ad personalization or tracking.
- More: Privacy and security in Firebase
7b. Data collected at a glance (App Store privacy label)
The following may be collected for advertising (Google AdMob) and app improvement (Firebase). It is not linked to your identity and not used to track you. It is sent only in versions where those features are turned on.
| Category | Data | Purpose | Recipient |
|---|---|---|---|
| Location | Coarse location (from IP) | Third-party advertising | Google AdMob |
| Identifiers | Device ID (e.g. app instance ID) | Third-party advertising, analytics | Google AdMob, Firebase |
| Usage data | Product interaction (feature usage counts) | Third-party advertising, analytics | Google AdMob, Firebase |
| Usage data | Advertising data (ad views and taps) | Third-party advertising | Google AdMob |
| Diagnostics | Crash data | App functionality | Firebase Crashlytics |
| Diagnostics | Performance data | App functionality | Firebase Crashlytics |
Health and fitness data, precise location (walk routes) and weight are not collected (never sent off the device).
8. Notifications
Only if you turn them on, story-ready notifications are scheduled locally on your device. They contain no health data.
9. Sharing
Cards, videos and route cards go only where you send them. Route cards show your walk route on a map, so check before sharing.
9a. Widget
The home and lock screen widget shows today’s distance and one comparison. The App passes these to the widget through storage on your iPhone (an App Group). Nothing is sent off the device.
9b. Users in the EEA, UK and Switzerland (GDPR)
- Controller: Double Y Labs (contact below).
